First,
the artist makes the design of the sarong from a photo or a
drawing. He outlines the design on the screen.
|

After
the design is hand-drawn onto each piece of fabric, the sarongs
are stretched onto racks where they will be hand-painted in
layers.
|

Painting
in layers by color. Each person paints a layer of each sarong.
Painting is not done with a brush, but with a small wadded piece
of cloth.
|

When
all the layers are painted, the sarongs are hung up to dry.
The last step is to boil them in hot water to set the colors,
then hang them again to dry them.
|
The
sarong-making is a long and tedious process. Only 14 sarongs can be
made in one day. In addition, sarongs can be processed only on sunny
days as the sunlight helps to dry and set the colors. If you are special
ordering sarongs, leave extra time for your order to be processed during
the months of September through March, as this is the rainy season when
sunlight is scarce.
